Gypsy moth

The gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) is present in Europe, North America and Central Asia. Damage is caused exclusively by the polyphagous caterpillars, which feed on developing leaves of more than 300 tree species. During severe outbreaks, trees and shrubs are completely defoliated over large areas, causing significant growth loss in forested ecosystems. In addition larvae cause contact dermatitis and are allergenic to humans.
